Our History
The Prudent Speculator was an investment advisory newsletter founded by Al Frank (pictured below). The publication built its reputation on a Value investing approach, emphasizing fundamental research, and long-term investment horizons with a focus on identifying undervalued securities through disciplined research methods.
Al served as editor from the newsletter’s founding in 1977, and in 1987 he brought John Buckingham onto the team. They went on to write the newsletter together, with Al serving as John’s mentor until his passing in 2002, when John assumed the editorship.
Over nearly five decades, the newsletter’s pages documented the challenges and rewards of stock ownership.
The investment landscape has evolved significantly since Al Frank's founding of The Prudent Speculator. However, John Buckingham continues to emphasize Value investing principles based on fundamental research and long-term perspectives.

The Next Chapter
A Patient Prospector is brought to you by the team that wrote The Prudent Speculator. Built from the ground up, it carries forward the same intellectual curiosity, analytical rigor and willingness to stay the course that readers have come to expect.
The name has changed, but the core philosophy has not.
We continue to believe that the best investment opportunities are often found through careful research rather than speculation; that valuation matters; that patience is an advantage; and that investors are best served by independent analysis rather than conventional narratives.
A Patient Prospector carries forward the spirit of The Prudent Speculator, looking across markets and industries for companies and opportunities that may be overlooked, misunderstood or temporarily out of favor, but whose underlying fundamentals may reward patient ownership.
Why “Patient”?
Because investing is ultimately an exercise in time.
Markets can be impatient. Prices can move for reasons that have little to do with long-term business value. Headlines come and go, fashions change and yesterday's favorite investment can quickly become tomorrow's forgotten story.
Our approach is different.
We seek to understand what an investment is worth, establish a reasonable margin of safety and then give good ideas the time they need to work. That does not mean ignoring risk or refusing to change our minds. It means resisting the temptation to confuse activity with progress.
Looking Forward
The investment world of tomorrow will undoubtedly look different from the one Al wrote about in March 1977. New technologies, industries, and challenges will create new opportunities—but also new ways for investors to lose sight of the fundamentals.
Our mission remains to help investors navigate that changing landscape with curiosity, skepticism, and patience. That foundation continues to inform our work today.
A Patient Prospector is where we take that philosophy forward.
